This conference is the inspiration of Penn Kemble, who has worked steadily over the
years to convene
and energize a community of people committed to democratic values
and connected, in one way or another, to the legacy of Sidney Hook. It is sponsored
by the League for Industial Democracy and Social Democrats, USA
Penn Kemble is Co-Editor of Democracy Digest and Senior Scholar at Freedom House.
He previously served as Deputy Director of the United States Information Agency under President
Clinton and as Special Representative of the Secretary of State for the Community of Democracies
Initiative,
an undertaking that brought together 106 democracies in Warsaw in June, 2000. He
currently
serves on the Board of Directors of the League for Industrial Democracy and is a
member of the
National Committee of Social Democrats, U.S.A
